What is freight?

If your shipment is over 150 lbs, it's considered freight.

  • You can ship freight within the U.S., to and from Canada or Mexico, and internationally.
  • Freight may travel via ship, aircraft, truck, or train and road (intermodal).
  • LTL (less-than-truckload) shipping can be an economical option if you:
    • Are shipping within North America
    • Have a less time-sensitive shipment
    • Only need a portion of the trailer space

FAQs

Do I need a special account to ship freight?
You need a World Cargo account with freight shipping enabled. When creating or updating your account, make sure to check the box that indicates you want to ship freight. If you already have an account, ask your account representative to enable freight shipping for you.
What can be shipped via freight?
Shipments over 150 lbs are generally classified as freight. This includes palletized goods, industrial equipment, large machinery, bulk commodities, and oversized items. Certain items may require special handling or be restricted — contact us for specific guidelines.
What's the difference between parcel and freight shipping?
Parcel shipping is for smaller packages typically under 150 lbs that can be handled by one person. Freight shipping is for larger, heavier shipments over 150 lbs that often require special equipment like forklifts or pallets to move. Freight also uses different documentation such as a Bill of Lading.
What's the difference between freight shipping and LTL shipping?
Freight shipping is a broad term for any large shipment. LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) is a specific type of freight shipping where your goods share truck space with other shippers' cargo. LTL is cost-effective when you don't need a full truck and is ideal for shipments between 150–15,000 lbs.
Which type of freight shipping is right for me?
The right freight service depends on your shipment weight, urgency, and destination. For time-sensitive shipments, air freight is ideal. For cost-effective domestic shipping, LTL is a great choice. For very large or full truckload shipments, FTL (Full Truckload) may be best. Get a quote to compare options.
What is freight forwarding?
Freight forwarding is a service where a third-party company (the freight forwarder) arranges the transportation of goods on behalf of shippers. World Cargo offers both air and ocean freight forwarding, handling the logistics, documentation, and coordination across multiple carriers to get your shipment to its international destination.
